HOMMAGE A DORA PEJAČEVIĆ

In memory of Dora Pejačević

She was an aristocrat, countess, daughter of a Croatian governor, woman of great erudition and composer educated in Zagreb, Munich and Dresden. An artist who moved in the highest intellectual circles of Vienna, Prague and Budapest, a devoted nurse to the wounded in World War I, a polyglot, a global citizen from the Croatian town of Našice, but above all a genius composer! Dora Pejačević, a musician whose music full of authentic passion pulls us into emotional whirlwinds of hurricane force and moves us deeply, was all that and much more. She was admired by the great poets and writers Rainer Maria Rilke and Karl Kraus, with whom she had intense intellectual contacts, and the untimely passing of one of the world's greatest conductors of that time, Arthur Nikisch, at the moment when he had already included the piece in the concert program, prevented him from performing her Symphony in Leipzig. The world of Dora's music, in its vast spectrum of experiences, from hypersensitivity and pensiveness and swirling romantic raptures to introspectiveness and a deep dive into the depths of one's own being, is rich in sky-high flights of spirit, but also falls and plunges into abysses of pain, despair and suffering.  Her music leaves no one indifferent! Dora Pejačević is indisputably one of the greatest composers of her era, and (thanks primarily to the efforts of the Music Information Centre of Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, which published all of her works) her pieces are only today confirmed as part of the anthology of world classical music and are performed with huge success all over the world – from London to Dresden, from the USA and Australia to Malaysia! Each new encounter with her (symphonic) music is a moment of the discovery of new beauties, pleasures and metaphysical dimensions of this-worldly being, which is rooted and anchored in otherworldly spheres to which only music has access. Dora's fascinating world of tones finds a direct way to one’s heart like a deep underground river, delights the soul and turns the most sublime and hidden feelings into a physical experience that ennobles us and makes us richer, becoming a priceless experience. A musical journey of hypnotic power!
