The Cantus Ensemble presents four compositions at their third concert. Three contemporary composers have already entered into the canon of twentieth-century music with their opuses, and their works show three different and complex approaches to sound.
The piece by György Ligeti was composed in 1969/1970 for the ensemble Die Reihe. The composer said of his Chamber Concerto that the composition “is a concerto in as much as all thirteen performers are equally virtuous soloists and their parts develop simultaneously, but in different rhythmic configurations and tempos”. The piece Incontri by Luigi Nono was composed in Venice in 1955 and it had its premiere at the renowned International Summer Course in Darmstadt. The piece is an example of serial music, while the title refers to the “meetings” of diverse, but complementary structures and the superimposition of layers of sound that are in a conflictual relationship. Partiels is a piece for 18 instruments and it is the third work in the cycle Acoustic Spaces. A student of Messiaen, Gérard Grisey was the founder of spectralism which is based on the analysis of sounds and on taking the harmonic spectrum – the internal, detailed structure of sound – as the basis for the harmonies. This is particularly highlighted at the beginning of the Partiels when each one of the instruments in the ensemble plays one of the partial tones discovered through analysis of a single deep tone on the trombone, creating a new brilliant quality of sound.
