The Heligonka: A Legacy of Folk Tradition

The heligonka is a traditional folk variant of the accordion, first referenced in the 18th century. In 1829., Cyril Demian, a master craftsman of organs and pianos, was awared a patent for the production of heligonkas in Vienna. Shortly after, their serial production spread across Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, and by the early 19th century, it had reached Hungary and Poland.

Due to its compact size and the ability to produce rich, diverse sounds, the heligonka quickly gained popularity as a favourite instrument for folk festivities and celebrations. In Croatia, particularly in the region of Gorski Kotar and Istria, the heligonka has enjoyed widespread use for generations. With no formal musical schools teaching the instrument, the knowledge of playing was passed down from parent to child, preseving this cherished tradition over the centuries.

We are proud to announce the 15th Annual Heligonka Festival, a time-honored tradition where talented musicians from Croatia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Italy will come together to perform at the renowned Vatroslav Lisinski Hall. Join us in celegrating the enchanting heritage of the heligonka and immerse yourself in the magic of its timeless sound.
