The Prime Minister and almost all the ministers are assassinated, and a list of the most prominent writers scheduled for execution is published. The turbulent events seem to pass over university professor Philippe, who is at a loss for sex, marriage, or life. Written as a response to Molière’s The Misanthrope and first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1970, this sharp ‘bourgeois comedy’ examines the lonely lives of university intellectuals. The Broadway production was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Play. The New York Times describes the play as ‘a fine evening of top-notch theatrical antics that say much more than they show’.
