J. S. BACH: ST MARK PASSION, Oratorio
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR OF THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC,
UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB
HANSJÖRG ALBRECHT, Conductor
In collaboration with the Music Academy, University of Zagreb.

Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: St Mark Passion, BWV 247

The first Bach in Croatia! “The young centenarians”, the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Academy of Music, University of Zagreb, will enhance another exceptional season of the Saturday at Lisinski cycle with a semi-theatrical performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St Mark Passion, BWV 247. Unlike his earlier passions (St John Passion and St Matthew Passion), the St Mark Passion is composed of the fragments of Bach's previous works (BWV 198, BWV 54, BWV 248). As the largest part of the manuscript was lost, numerous musicians have tried to reconstruct this piece based on the preserved historical sources. The version chosen for this concert is the reconstruction by conductor Diethard Hellmann from 1964, revised by Andreas Glöckner in 2001. The Symphony Orchestra, Choir and soloists of the Zagreb Music Academy will be conducted by Hansjörg Albrecht, eminent conductor and professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
Ever since the foundation of the Academy of Music in 1921, its excellent ensembles composed of students from all departments and study years have tried themselves at various styles and a versatile and complex repertoire.
With great enthusiasm and commitment, in collaboration with numerous artists and composers, they have performed interpretatively demanding works, such as Bach's St. John Passion, Brahms’s German Requiem, Mendelssohn’s oratorios Elijah and St. Paul, Mahler’s Second and Ninth Symphonies, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Boris Papandopulo’s Istrian Frescos, Arthur Honegger’s oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake, Britten's War Requiem...
