Claudio Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610), SV 206/206a

If there is music from the faraway, unfathomable vastness of long‑gone times that can shake us to the core, enchant and make the concept of the divine almost physically tangible, then it is the undeniably magnificent piece Vespro della Beata Vergine by the genius Claudio Monteverdi!  The creative power, the amazing wealth of ideas, the visionary synthesis of the old and the new, the sacral and the secular, the God‑given sense for the monumental architecture of the artistic work of that Italian genius is comparable only to the unique spiritual and intellectual capacities and artistic achievements of his contemporary, the genius of the written word – William Shakespeare!

Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Monteverdi's grandiose piece is the purest mirror of heavenly beautiful music: in it we find the beautiful, centuries‑old sacral music of the dark, mystical spaces of grandiose cathedrals and an echo of angels singing, but we also discern the silhouettes of then young opera music, as well as the echoes of virtuoso folk musicians playing and the atmosphere of lively village festivities. A guarantee that the audience will enjoy Monteverdi's work, in which the Renaissance and the Baroque are combined in a mesmerizing cocktail of spiritual pleasure, is one of the best ensembles today in the field of the so‑called historically informed performance – Il Pomo d'Oro.
Crowned with the most prestigious awards from the international media specialized in early music (let us highlight the 2023 BBC Music Magazine Choral Award), this ensemble is enthusiastically received by critics and audiences in the most prestigious concert venues in the world. An impressive total of 44 albums recorded in the twelve years of their existence is a proof of not only professional quality and great dedication to music, but also of a passion for searching for unknown and lesser‑known pieces from the musical treasure trove of past centuries.
