Carl Orff: CARMINA BURANA

For the 10th consecutive year, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra will perform its January concert aimed at bringing back the memory of the professional mark and style of Maestro Milan Horvat – long-time chief conductor and, for a while, director of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.
Every mention of Maestro Horvat’s name arouses respect and brings a smile to your face, perhaps partly because of his famous nickname Milček, but certainly because of his personal and professional energy felt by everyone in his presence.
Through this year’s concert on 27 January, we wish to mark the 50th anniversary of the performance of Carmina Burana in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Then at the height of his career, Maestro Horvat conducted the ORF Symphony Orchestra, choir and soloists playing this exceptionally popular work.

Note to the work:
Carmina Burana (Songs Of Beuren) is a manuscript collection of 228 medieval poems, written mostly in Latin, with a few written in Middle High German, and old Arpitan.
The poems are divided by subject into: scathing moral and satirical poems dealing with, in particular, simony, followed by love songs, and tavern drinking songs about wine, dancing and gambling as well as two dramatical works recounting the passion of Christ. The Songs Of Beuren were a favourite among the educated classes across medieval Europe. Many of them were included in the songbooks of student associations at Central European universities.
For his cantata Carmina Burana (composed in 1937), Carl Orff selected 25 poems from the collection, leaving them almost unchanged.
