What happens when two men find themselves in the middle of an honest conversation, asking each other (important) life questions?

Is it acceptable to order chamomile tea at a café if you're a man? How much thought should you give before marrying a woman you met at the gym just because she has a great butt? And what should you ask Willem Dafoe while running next to him on a treadmill?

Such questions – at once trivial and deeply personal – are the entry point into "The Fifth Step," a contemporary play by David Ireland that gave Croatian audiences a striking theatrical experience: funny, uncomfortable, and deeply emotional.

The play follows Luke, a young man starting recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous, and James, his experienced sponsor. What starts as a mentoring conversation gradually turns into a complex study of male intimacy, vulnerability, and faith – without embellishment or easy answers. "The Fifth Step" offers no solutions, but asks questions rarely spoken aloud. The minimalist staging and focus on acting heighten the intimacy – the audience doesn't watch from a safe distance, but becomes a silent witness.

Beyond addiction and recovery, the play raises questions about male emotions, mental health, and why honesty is often seen as weakness. Its humor comes from the tension between what is said and left unsaid, even in the toughest moments. The play stays with audiences long after they leave, opening space for conversation about themes concerning far more people than we tend to admit.

Added weight comes from the fact that this is the play's first production worldwide after its West End run, where Martin Freeman and Jack Lowden achieved remarkable success in the lead roles.
