What happens when two men find themselves in the middle of an honest conversation, asking each other important questions about life? Is it acceptable for a man to order chamomile tea in a café? How long should you think before marrying a woman you met at the gym simply because she has a great ass? And what should you ask Willem Dafoe while running next to him on a treadmill?
Such questions – both mundane and deeply personal – offer an entry into the world of “The Fifth Step,” a contemporary drama by David Ireland that brings Croatian audiences a witty, unsettling and deeply emotional theatrical experience.
The play follows Luka, a young man beginning his recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, and James, his experienced sponsor. What starts as a mentoring conversation gradually develops into a complex exploration of male intimacy, vulnerability and faith – without embellishment or easy answers. “The Fifth Step” offers no solutions, but it raises questions that are rarely spoken aloud.
Its minimalist form and strong focus on acting heighten the sense of intimacy. The audience does not observe the story from a safe distance but becomes its silent witness. In addition to addiction and recovery, the play explores male emotions, mental health and why honesty is so often perceived as weakness. Its humour arises from the tension between what is said and what remains unspoken, even in the most difficult moments.
The play stays with the audience long after they leave the theatre, opening a space for conversation about issues that affect far more people than we are willing to admit. The production is the first international staging of the play following its highly successful West End run, starred M. Freeman and J. Lowden.
