BUDAPEST FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA
IVÁN FISCHER, Conductor
RENAUD CAPUÇON, Violin

Programme:
Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel: Morgengruß for mix choir a capella, Op. 3 No. 4, from Gartenlieder
Felix Mendelssohn‑Bartholdy: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 64
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C‑sharp minor

Felix MendelssohnBartholdy composed one of the most popular violin concertos and secured it an indispensable place in violinists’ education, but according to some opinions, it lags behind the masterpieces of Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius in terms of virtuosity. There is no better way to be convinced of the superficiality of such a view than by listening to the interpretation of one of today's leading violinists, Renaud Capuçon.

In this season of the Saturday at Lisinski concert series, we have the opportunity to host another top orchestra from Budapest, founded by the famous maestro Iván Fischer with Zoltán Kocsis in 1983. In the meantime, the Budapest Festival Orchestra has grown into the Hungarian ensemble with the largest international presence. In addition to a number of concert series, among which educational and socially engaged programs stand out, the Orchestra, conducted by its chief conductor, has recorded a number of masterpieces of orchestral literature. To complete the cycle of recordings of Gustav Mahler's monumental symphonies, they only lack the majestic Eighth Symphony in Eflat major. The Zagreb audience will get to admire their performance of his Fifth Symphony in Csharp minor, best known to film fans for its fourth movement, marked Adagietto, to which Luchino Visconti gave his personal touch in his film adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel Death in Venice.  But this symphony is much more than that!
