A CELEBRATION OF TRADITION, DANCE AND CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL EXPRESSION
The richness of Azerbaijani culture, the splendour of traditional dances, and a unique fusion of jazz and national musical heritage are coming to Zagreb!
On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, at 7:30 PM, the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall will host a special evening dedicated to the musical and dance traditions of Azerbaijan.
The audience can look forward to a new concert programme by the Azerbaijan State Dance Ensemble, featuring performances by prominent Azerbaijani musicians Emil Afrasiyab and Anvar Sadigov.
AZERBAIJAN STATE DANCE ENSEMBLE
The Azerbaijan State Dance Ensemble was founded in 1970. Throughout its long history, the Ensemble has become an important ambassador of Azerbaijani cultural heritage around the world.
The Ensemble presents and promotes the distinctive choreographic traditions of Azerbaijani art, the richness of its folklore, and the beauty, elegance and expressive character of the country’s national dance heritage.
It regularly participates in major national events in Azerbaijan and has successfully performed in numerous countries around the world, including the United States, Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Israel, India, Nepal, South Korea, Greece, Jordan, Thailand, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, China, Vietnam, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Brazil and Cuba.
The Ensemble regularly represents Azerbaijani culture at international festivals and cultural events, including Days of Azerbaijani Culture held abroad.
In addition to traditional Azerbaijani folk dances, its repertoire includes choreographic works set to music by prominent Azerbaijani composers. In Zagreb, the Ensemble will present a new concert programme showcasing the richness and diversity of Azerbaijani dance and musical traditions.
EMIL AFRASIYAB – JAZZ THAT BRINGS CULTURES TOGETHER
Emil Afrasiyab is a prominent Azerbaijani jazz and jazz fusion musician whose musical expression combines traditional jazz melodies with modern rhythms and a variety of ethnic influences.
His music reflects his personal experiences and cultural heritage. Through the fusion of diverse musical influences, he has developed a distinctive, original and expressive style.
Through his work, Emil explores the possibilities of jazz and its ability to evolve, transform and embrace new cultural influences. His music bridges tradition and modernity, creating a sound that combines the characteristics of classic jazz with contemporary musical expression.
He has performed on numerous stages and at festivals around the world. One of his particularly notable appearances was at the Monterey Jazz Festival, where audiences had the opportunity to experience his original fusion of jazz and Azerbaijani music, as well as his virtuoso saxophone technique.
At the Baku Jazz Festival, he successfully combined elements of Azerbaijani folk music with jazz, demonstrating his ability to bring different musical traditions together.
In addition to festivals, he has performed at renowned music clubs around the world, including Jazz Cafe in London, Duc des Lombards in Paris and Blue Note Jazz Club in New York.
ANVAR SADIGOV – A VIRTUOSO BRIDGING MUSICAL TRADITIONS
Anvar Sadigov is a prominent Azerbaijani musician, arranger and virtuoso accordionist. Throughout his artistic career, he has explored a wide range of musical genres, masterfully performing folk music, mugham, classical music and jazz.
His musical expression serves as a bridge between different musical traditions, creating a harmonious and distinctive synthesis of styles.
Throughout his career, he has performed in concert halls across numerous countries, including Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, Israel, Cyprus, France, Austria, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Türkiye, Ukraine, Morocco, Georgia, Japan and China. He has represented Azerbaijani music at various international musical events and concerts on numerous occasions and has also performed at a wide range of jazz festivals.
Anvar Sadigov is an associate professor at the Azerbaijan National Conservatory.
A particularly important aspect of his artistic work is the development of a new Azerbaijani musical instrument. Beginning in 2001, he worked to realise an idea for an accordion that he had envisioned since childhood. In 2007, he succeeded in creating a three-octave accordion with a new register, which he named “ReneveR.”
The instrument was approved by the Copyright Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2013 and, in 2018, was registered as an invention and patented by the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In addition to offering a wide range of sounds, this new accordion has opened up new possibilities for performing Azerbaijani music on the instrument and is becoming increasingly popular among young musicians.
