During his long career, violinist Gidon Kremer has played in all world's most famous concert halls, collaborated with music greats and, besides the usual classical music forms, promoted the achievements of contemporary authors such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Giya Kancheli, Sofia Gubaidulina, Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Philip Glass and Astor Piazzolla, who entrusted him with performing the premiere of their works. Combining the incompatible, constantly exploring the possibilities of interpretation, his uncompromising individuality and a flood of new ideas have earned him numerous awards and successful albums, which strengthened his position in the history of music.

 

Always open to new ideas and pushing the boundaries of art, Kremer is preparing a specially designed programme for Lisinski Hall. The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, Op. 51, Hob XX:1b by Joseph Haydn and String Quartet in E-flat minor No. 15 Op. 144 by Dmitri Shostakovich, enriched with an innovative and most interesting interpretation. The works will be entwined with the thoughts of the world's greats (Primo Levi, Stephen Hawking, Rose Ausländer, Jorge Luis Borges, Harold Pinter, Steve Jobs) whose lives were a great inspiration to these excellent musicians. It will for sure also dazzle the Zagreb audience in the context of the music masterpieces that will be performed that evening.

 

The world knows him as an outspoken artist, a critic of unnecessary luxury and elitism of classical music, which resulted in his book Letters to a Young Pianist. In it, he reflects on the situation in the whole music industry and hardships and challenges that young and talented musicians face, struggling for their place on the scene.

 

He always provides great support to young musicians. This is also how Kremerata Baltica was founded, an orchestra that comprises the best musicians from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, a harmonious team with a specific approach to music as an overall experience of life, which they live together with great passion.
